It's hard for me to imagine life in the now without a cellphone. But I grew up without one. Went to college without one. Got married and lived without one for a while. Actually until we got pregnant my wife and I didn't have a cell phone. And when we first gone one, we got ONE. We shared it!

But I think more and more people are giving up their home phone for everyone to have a cell phone. But I can't imagine this scenario as a middle school kid. I'm sure my parents wouldn't have put out the $$ for me to get one. So for me to call a girl (after I mustered up the courage) I'd have to ask my mom or stepdad to borrow their cell phone. And what if I had to leave a message? Would she (or any friend I called) have to call back on my parents' phone? Wow. That seems so inconvenient. I probably wouldn't have had a social life. Or I'd have gotten a job to pay my own cell bill.

I can remember having to set times to meet people at a festival or ballgame or something and not knowing if they were late or not when they weren't on time. And I couldn't call them to find out. I can remember having to pull over and find a pay phone to call someone at their house because I was going to be 30 minutes late. But I was hoping they'd be at home to get my call (neither of us had cell phones).

So I'm sure kids these days are growing up with a completely different mindset in terms of phones and communication (maybe I'm glad we didn't have facebook when I was in Middle/High School. I can only imagine the drama). But I wonder how many actually still have phones in their house that are landlines?

So now that about 75% of the students voted "yes" to being involved in the choice of a new mascot...what's next? The papers are saying that a student group will be formed really soon. But there was confusion as people said the ballot wasn't exactly clear on what to vote on. The "yes" and "no" on the ballot was vague.

But it raises plenty of questions:

But how soon do we expect suggestions?

Will it be a "Students Only" vote, or will they be just a part in conjunction with the adminstration or alumni group?

Do you think changes stop at the mascot?

Do you ever fear a proposed change from Ole Miss Rebels?

Would you be okay wiht Ackbar?

There are many delicious dishes to the credit of the mexican category and the most popular one is this mexican dish – taquito. This mexican dish is also popular in puerto rico. Puerto rico is not the name of a mexican dish, since we are dealing with mexcian dishes you are prone to be misunderstood and take it up as the name of yet another mexican dish.
On the other hand puerto rico is a place which is offically known as the commonwealth of puerto rico. It literally means assoicated free state of puerto rico. This associated free states of puerto rico is a self governing unincorported territory which is located in the united states of america. To be precise it is located in the northeastern carribbean, east of the dominican republic as well as on the west of the virgin islands.
So you have got a brief idea about puerto rico and now we are going back to our famous mexican dish taquito. As usual the chief ingredient of this mexican dish is tortilla. Here the tortilla is used up with a particualr kind of filling which usally varies from beef or chicken. The tortilla used up in this dish varies from other dishes is that the tortilla is crisp – fried. The tortilla which is used up to make this delicious dish taquito is the corn or maize one.
Many changes have been brought about in this dish which has created a variety of taquito in different regions. Besides using beef or chicken as the filling you can use other types of fillings like cheese, potato or vegetables and eat up. Therefore vegetarians can use up this kind of fillings to eat this mexican dish. Salsa as well as guacamole are the part and parcel of this mexican dish i.e. salsa and guacamole are served along with taquitos.

So The Orchard is a fairly new church in town. Been meeting at The Powerhouse, then The AMP, and now back to The Powerhouse (since The AMP is closing) for a short while now. Their morning services will be continuing as usual (at 9 amd 10:30am).

But now they're doing something different it seems. They're going to be meeting upstairs at Rooster's Blues Bar for their Sunday evening services at 7pm. Their aim is to reach people other churches are not reaching through "traditional services". It aims to be a place for people to come with their questions and doubts and to explore who God is together. The message will be parallel to the morning messages, but in a much more casual atmosphere with interaction a key part.

But what do you think about a church in a bar? Or more specifically a church in a bar in Oxford?

There have been articles in the DM and TLV this week on the new service as well.

There are very few times it is good when no one takes you seriously. The fifth anniversary of the founding of Laff Co., Oxford’s professional improv comedy troupe, is one of those times. Members of the comedy troupe are pulling out all the stops for their biggest show of the year. Laff Co.’s director, Bruce Butler, is excited by the anniversary show as its proceeds from the show support the Southeastern Comedy Arts Alliance and it always draws special guests.

The anniversary has developed the name “Night of 1,000 Laughs” and has all the cast members smiling as Tupelo radio station Z98.5 and Coors beer are sponsoring the show. “We think this will give us the chance to attract a new audience,” commented Butler. The support of media and corporate sponsors is the result of hard work on the part of Laff Co. who partnered with the radio station earlier in the year to produce the stand-up comedy contest “Mouth of the South” that was very successful. “I think our work on the stand-up comedy contest showed the radio station that improv comedy can draw a crowd,” added Butler.

Z98.5 offered to promote the show after hearing that funds raised through the show would be used to support programs for the Southeastern Comedy Arts Alliance. The support of the radio station has inspired Laff Co to new levels of absurdity for the September 3, 2009 performance at The Powerhouse Community Arts Center. The troupe has invited back former members to perform including Karlous Miller, a featured stand-up comic in Atlanta who has also appeared on the television show “Hell Date.” In addition, the troupe will be inviting members from the audience to participate in skits onstage. “The best thing about improv is that you never know what will happen or who is going to do what,” shared Laff Co member Mallarie Pitcher.

Tickets for “Night of 1,000 Laughs” are on sale at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center. The performance is Thursday, September 3, 2009 at The Powerhouse with ticket prices $5 if purchased in advance or $7 at the door. To reserve tickets or for more information about the show, call The Powerhouse at 662-236-6429.

I am also the mother of 4 great kids.
I'm glad i came across this site, being new and being very busy makes it hard to meet people.

The New Chick-Fil-A :: my experiences

Woohoo!

When I was exploring the move to Oxford, I asked, "Is there a Chick-Fil-A in Oxford?" It was that important of a factor. But I guess not ultimately important because I came anyway. But early in the spring it was announced that Oxford would be getting a Chick-Fil-A. I was ecstatic. Well, last Thursday it opened. I wasn't one of the ones to camp out all day/night Wednesday in order to get free chicken for a year.

BUT I did take the kids to eat supper there Thursday evening. Me and half of Lafayette County. But it turned out to be the best customer service I've ever experienced!

We pull up and we're in line. A nice lady came to my window to ask if we were dining in or driving through. She assured me that our wait would not be long inside. So we parked and walked in (after further assurances that she would help us exit our parking space which could be blocked by the drive thru line.)

It's just me and my three kids. Somehow my wife missed this trip. But we walk up to the restaurant and a lady opens the door for us greets us by giving the children each a little Chick-Fil-A cow toy. I start dropping some "Thank You's" so they all say "My Pleasure." We walk in and things seem crazy but organized. We find a spot in line and we're only two deep. Then a lady comes up and asks me if I'd like for her to reserve a table close to the play area. Huh? Are you serious? Sure, why not. So she goes and gets a high chair and all for my one year old son and gets a place-mat that sticks to the table for him too.

I order my food. She reappears and tells me where my table is. I start to let my oldest daughter hold my son and send her and my four year old daughter to the table. The lady asks if I want her to walk my kids to their table. Sure! Then she tells me I can go ahead to the table if I want, and she'll bring my food to me. Wow. Ok. Why not?

So then as we start to eat a trey gets pushed on the table and four year old's bottle of chocolate milk falls off the table, down my leg, and then onto the floor. So someone appears out of no where and cleans it up with a towel. And brings us a new bottle of chocolate milk. Then people bring us balloons, ranch dipping sauce, and ketchup. And napkins.

So we eat our chicken and enjoy things. But as we're finishing up the girls want to go into the play area. So I send them on their way and then scarf down a bit more chicken while my son finishes his fruit cup. As we're cleaning up and all, a man comes to help. So I'm thinking, this is awesome! These folks are really wanting me to come back. Everyone was so helpful.

Well I go to get the girls from the playroom my four year old is distressed. I see that a small scab from a previous boo-boo got hit and was bleeding on her leg/foot. So I'm holding my son trying to find some napkins. I worker sees me and tells me to sit tight while she goes to get something for her foot. She comes back w/ an antiseptic wipe and a band-aid. I thank her and was about to clean up my daughter's bloody mess. But she says, "Sit her here and I'll fix her up." She then proceeds to clean all the blood off of her ankle and foot, and then puts the band-aid on gently and asks her if everything is okay.

So this was far and beyond anything I've ever experienced. Now I know that Chick-Fil-A brought in some "professional restaurant openers" for the first week or so. ButI was in awe. I'll be back. A lot.

Have you been yet? How was it?

I ate there for lunch the other day. Had the Farmboy. It was messy, but good. I was eating with some friends, enjoying conversation, but my eyes kept drifting to the long table there covered in sand. I wanted to play.

After lunch some friends left, but one stuck around so we could play a couple of rounds. I didn't know what it was called at first. Nor the rules. But I was into sliding those things (?) down the long table and trying to get them to stop somewhere. But after asking a waiter the rules, we were off.

You had to hit the side, and then you scored based on how close (or hanging off) you got to the end. Corners were extra points. But there is offense and defense in the game. And smack talk too. So good strategy involved. It was fun. I won the first game. My friend won the second. But we had to be somewhere so didn't get to play the rubber match.

Has anyone else played? Did you enjoy it? [and have you tried the Farmboy? Smoked sausage on a bun with sauerkraut and Bama BBQ Sauce?]

Is this not some crap? Is it reeking of socialized medicine to anyone else? Hmm, let's see where that has worked before....um, nowhere!

And how is it going to be paid for? Oh yeah, from the pockets of everyone else. So the people who already are paying their own health insurance, or are on a plan w/ their employer are going to have to get their taxes increased to pay for everyone else's health care.

Does anyone have an inkling as to how our US senators and representatives from MS plan to vote?

Seems behind Boure or behind City Hall are proposed places for a three story parking garage. But it's going to cost some major money. And raise taxes too.
